Information technology might non look like it on the surface, but each Minecraft earth is rich with resource. Making the most of them is the next step in getting the most out of the game. In Chapter ii, "Start-Night Survival," you put together a pack of essentials sufficient to last the first nighttime, just this is really just the smallest prequel to the real game, and describing how to find, create, and use other types of resources forms much of this book. This affiliate is about edifice the foundation you tin can use to launch into the rest of the game. Your focus is on a few key points: build an outdoor shelter, find nutrient to stave off hunger, improve your collection of tools, and build a breast to safely store items. This solidifies your position, making your base more than impervious to attack, allows you to practice all sorts of Minecrafty things more efficiently, and sets yourself upwardly for longer excursions both in a higher place and below ground.

The good news is that y'all already accept a base, and then y'all can explore during the day, try non to lose your way, and caput dorsum at night. Notwithstanding, you still need to avoid at to the lowest degree some of the hostile mobs that persist during the day.

Introducing the HUD

Before we start, let's take a look at the Heads-Upward Brandish (HUD)—that collection of icons and status bars at the lesser of the screen. Figure 3.1 shows the HUD equally it appears in Survival mode with all possible indicators displayed. (The Artistic mode HUD but shows the hotbar.)

FIGURE 3.1

FIGURE iii.i The HUD provides fundamental status indications. Health is all important, but depression hunger as well leads to low health, then continue a shut eye on both.

  1. Armor bar
  2. Health bar
  3. Experience bar
  4. Oxygen bar
  5. Hunger bar
  6. Hotbar

Each section of the HUD provides a cardinal nugget of information about the health or condition of your avatar:

  • Armor bar—The armor bar appears when you've equipped your avatar with any type of armor and shows the electric current harm absorption level. Each armor icon represents an 8% reduction in the damage yous'll accept, and so a 10/10 suit of armor reduces the damage you take by lxxx%, whereas a 1/10 suit absorbs only viii%. Armor becomes less effective the more damage it absorbs, although the rate at which it deteriorates also depends on the material it'southward fabricated of—leather being the weakest and diamond the strongest.
  • Health bar—You have up to 20 points of health available, represented by the ten hearts shown. Each time you lot take harm, from hunger, spider bites, zombie slaps, a fall, existence nether water too long, and so on, half a heart or more than disappears with a distinctive click racket. Wellness and hunger accept a complicated human relationship. You lot tin read more later in this chapter starting at "Hunger Management."
  • Experience bar—The feel bar increases the more you mine, smelt, cook, kill hostile mobs, trade with villagers, and fish. Your current level is shown in the middle of the bar. When it'southward total, you movement to the next experience level. Experience isn't mostly important until you first enchanting and giving boosted powers to items such as swords (see Chapter 10, "Enchanting, Anvils, and Brewing"). Dissimilar other role-playing games, experience in Minecraft is more like a currency that y'all spend on enchantments, so it waxes and wanes. But all feel gained counts toward the concluding score shown on the screen when you die. Killing a mob drops experience orbs that either wing direct toward you or float to the ground waiting for you to collect. You can as well proceeds experience by smelting sure items in the furnace and carrying out other activities such as finding rare ores. Dying, however, drops your experience level down to null.
  • Oxygen bar—The oxygen bar appears whenever you lot go underwater and information technology quickly starts to drop. You can probably concord your own breath for longer! (The world tape was 22 minutes by Stig Severinsen!) As soon every bit your oxygen level hits nil, your health starts taking a two-signal hit every second, but it resurfaces for merely an instant if yous hold downward the jump central until you've reached air again. There'due south no danger with deep dives either. Yous can employ the ability to do interesting things like building an underwater base of operations. An instance is shown in Figure 3.2, and I show you how to build your own in Chapter 8, "Artistic Construction."

    FIGURE 3.2

Effigy iii.two Underwater bases are impervious to mob attacks (but watch your oxygen while building it). In fact, the only mobs that spawn underwater outside of the huge ocean monument structures are squids, which pose no danger to yous.

  • Hunger bar—You lot also have 20 points of hunger bachelor, every bit well equally a subconscious value called Saturation. Like health, each hunger bar icon holds two points and tin can reduce by half an icon (that icon is, incidentally, a shank, or the lower part of a leg of meat) at a fourth dimension.
  • Hotbar—These nine slots correspond items you tin can select with the mouse roll wheel or by pressing the 1–9 keys. Press Eastward to access your full inventory and to change the items in these slots. The white number next to some shows that slot's count of stacked identical items. A durability bar also appears under each tool'due south icon in greenish, gradually reducing equally you lot use them until the tool actually breaks and disappears from your inventory. You'll have some alert of this considering the bar turns carmine when it's close to cypher. Run across "Improving Your Tools" after in the chapter to learn more nigh the immovability of unlike materials.

In multiplayer, your HUD also displays a chat window in the lesser-left corner. Printing T to expand the chat window.

Toggle the unabridged HUD brandish off and on by pressing F1. Press F3 with the HUD turned on to view a much more detailed HUD debug screen (see Figure three.3.)

The coordinates shown in the debug screen are based on the world's origin where x=0 and z=0. (y shows your current level above bedrock.) Take a note of the electric current values. If y'all get lost earlier y'all have had the chance to build a bed and reset your spawn betoken, y'all can e'er notice your way dorsum to your original spawn and, presumably, your kickoff shelter, by facing in a management that volition bring both x and y back to those noted values. If yous do sleep in a bed and reset your spawn, plow on the debug screen and write downwardly the coordinates shown earlier you head out. This is particularly useful if y'all plan on using the teleport cheat (/tp xxx yyy zzz).

FIGURE 3.3

FIGURE iii.3 The Debug HUD provides a lot of cryptic data merely tin can also help you navigate home.

  1. Your location in blocks east of your original spawn betoken. Blocks west are shown as a negative.
  2. Your current vertical height in layers above bedrock.
  3. Your location in blocks due south of your original spawn point. Blocks n are shown every bit a negative.
  4. The direction you are facing and how moving frontwards will change the current coordinates.
  5. The current biome type.

Incidentally, but so we're clear: Adulterous in Minecraft doesn't carry with information technology the negative connotations that cheating does in most other contexts. Provided that you've enabled cheats in the game menu, you can but type a frontwards slash (/) followed by the cheat text to customize the running state of the game. Make sure to press Enter or Return after y'all type your cheat to submit the command to Minecraft.

When you need to return, and I should warn yous that this can have some experimentation and a little practice, plough and take a few steps while noting the change in values of your current coordinates. Shift those x and z values back toward the coordinates you lot originally recorded. You'll probably wander around a bit, but eventually you'll get there.
